A Journey Through Meditation : Rwa Bhineda and the Balance Within
In Balinese Ancient Philosophy, meditation is a sacred practice that
goes far beyond relaxation or focus. It is a spiritual discipline used to connect the self (atma) with the
divine consciousness (paramatma), restore inner harmony, and attune oneself
with the cosmic laws of nature (Rta).
Meditation is a core pathway to self-awareness,
inner balance, and spiritual transformation, deeply
rooted in the Balinese understanding of the Tri Kaya Parisudha (pure thoughts, pure speech, pure action) and Rwa Bhineda (the principle of duality
and harmony).
What Does Meditation Mean in Balinese Ancient Philosophy?
In Balinese
tradition, meditation is known as "Semadi"
or "Tapa Semadi",
which refers to deep contemplation and merging the self with the universal
spirit. It is often practiced alongside mantra
chanting, mudra (sacred
gestures), and nyasa (energy
placement).
Key Concepts:
- Atma (individual soul) seeks unity
with Paramatma (universal
soul).
- Silence
(Mauna) is a
gateway to inner truth.
- It purifies the five elements within the body
(Panca Maha Bhuta): Akasa, Bayu, Teja, Apah, Pertiwi.
- Meditation aligns one with Dharma – the right path,
restoring balance within and with nature.
The Impact of Meditation for Oneself (According to Balinese Philosophy)
- Spiritual
Clarity –
Clears the lens of perception to understand the true Self (Swarupa).
- Emotional
Balance –
Transforms dualities (Rwa Bhineda: light/dark, good/bad) into harmony.
- Energy
Cleansing –
Balances the Nadi (energy
channels) and awakens the kundalini.
- Mental
Purification –
Controls citta (the mind), moving
from noise to silence.
- Transformation – From outer attachment (maya)
to inner truth (satya).
- Unity
with Nature –
Awakens one’s connection to the cosmic
order (Rta) and the divine
forces (Dewa-Dewi).
How Catu Tastra Bali
Conducts Meditation for Self-Awareness and Transformation
Catu Tastra
Bali embraces authentic Balinese
spiritual teachings and rituals to guide participants through a sacred
journey of awakening. Our meditation is based on Ancient Balinese Knowledge, with a strong focus on Ongkara Pranawa and Rwa Bhineda Meditation.
1. Ongkara Pranawa Meditation
- Focuses on chanting the sacred
syllable "Ong" or
"Ongkara", the
essence of divine sound and cosmic vibration.
- Guides participants through:
- Pranayama (breathwork) to purify life
force.
- Chanting "Ong" with focused
breath to activate energy centers (cakra).
- Visualization of light from within, expanding
into universal consciousness.
- Helps cleanse the mind, open
the heart, and connect to the
source (Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa).
2. Rwa Bhineda Meditation
- Based on the principle of duality and balance.
- Participants are guided to:
- Reflect on their inner
dualities (fear/courage, doubt/faith, anger/peace).
- Practice mindfulness and breath to accept
and harmonize both sides.
- Use visualizations of sun and moon, black and white, or shiva and shakti energies to
restore inner equilibrium.
- This meditation cultivates deep
acceptance, compassion, and non-judgmental awareness.
